Students work together to construct a piecewise graph from segments of other graphs.
Each group is given a set of linear equations that are graphed on portions of the coordinate plane. Each member must identify the domain of his portion. The group joins the pieces together to create a "new" piecewise graph. The group writes the function definition of the piecewise graph. Each piecewise graph is then displayed & discussed. Discussion might include end behavior, "holes" in the graph, & endpoints. Discussion can be reversed, focusing on ways a piecewise function can be graphed from a function definition. Students can demonstrate the knowledge gained by graphing piecewise functions from function definitions.
