3 Tasks for students to learn/review unit specific vocabulary for the Gr. 4 Building Things science unit. Students classify each vocabulary term into one of three columns (FLY), then write their own definition of each word and practice using each in a scientific sentence.
A template of the Frayer organizer has been included for students who may wish to use it. Some of my students create journal pages for their tasks, others type up the info in Google Drive, others write it all out on lined paper and put it in their duo-tang. You could have them do their tasks with partners, if you wish.This can start your science unit or be a unit wrap-up/review activity (or both!).
My class gets 2-3 classes to do all three tasks at the beginning of our unit. We then come back to the chart, and re-sort our words at the end.... the hope is that students can move their words to the left-hand column by the end (thereby showing they understand them). Many of my students will also update, amend or expand their definitions at the end - this shows me the growth in their learning and level of understanding.
