Included with each activity sheet, are the specific letters needed to build all the words on the page. You can make a set of letters for each student, or print a few sets on different colored copy paper and store them in separate Ziploc baggies. I recommend printing them in different colors so the sets don’t get mixed up.
I also included a page with all the lower case letters. You can print a few sets on different colored copy paper and store them in Ziploc baggies. This way, you don’t have to print a new set of letters for each activity sheet.
If you would prefer not to print any letters, you can use real letter tiles instead.
✍Teacher Note
I created these activity sheets with kindergartners in mind. However, they are also appropriate for first graders who need to practice decoding and blending individual sounds in words.

Building words is a fun way for students to practice decoding and blending individual sounds in words.
There are a total of 18 different activity sheets and each sheet gives the students 6 opportunities to build words.
Students build a word, change a letter or two to make a whole new word, write the new word, and then highlight both words in the sentence.
Here is what’s included:
⭐9 different building words with blends activity sheets
Each activity sheet begins with a CVC word or a word where the final consonant is doubled. This way, students can successfully read and build the word. Then, students change the first letter of the word to a specific blend, to make a whole new word, and read and write the new word. This enables students to easily see how the rest of the word is still pronounced the same way. Last, students read the sentence and highlight both of the words they built.
⭐9 different building words with digraphs activity sheets
Each activity sheet begins with a CVC, CVCe, or CVCC word. Students will change one letter and replace it with a beginning or ending digraph (ch, ph, sh, th, wh, ck, gn, kn, ll, ng, tch, wr, zz) to make a whole new word. Once again, by manipulating sounds, students will gain automatic familiarity with the patterns of sounds in words.
⭐2 different building words with blends and digraphs activity sheets
Each activity sheet begins with a CVCC, CCVC, or CCVCC word. Students will change a blend to a digraph or a digraph to a blend, to make a whole new word.
Answer keys are included for each activity sheet, as well as, the specific letters needed to build all the words on the page. You can make a set of letters for each student, or print a few sets on different colored copy paper and store them in separate Ziploc baggies. I recommend printing them in different colors so the sets don’t get mixed up.
I also included a page with all the lower case letters and a page with all the capital letters. You can print a few sets on different colored copy paper and store them in Ziploc baggies. This way, you don’t have to print a new set of letters for each activity sheet.
