Building a Community of Writers: Launching Writers' Workshop

The Fairfax County Public School System in Virginia has new PLANNING and PACING guides for the 2017 - 2018 school year. The first unit in language arts is titled, "Building a Community of Readers and Writers". I have developed my writing lesson power point presentations using the NEW planning and pacing guide for 5th grade and Virginia ELA SOLs, but I think the lesson could be adapted for 4th and 6th grades.

This lesson helps students SELECT one entry to develop into a draft and includes learning targets, an objective, modeling, sentence stems for students to use when engaged in TURN~AND~TALK, and an exit ticket.

This lesson explicitly teaches students to choose their best entries to develop into drafts. The presentation is for one teacher and his/her students.

Lesson aligned with and inspired by:
* FCPS ELA Planning and Pacing Guide – 5th Grade; Unit 1
https://www.fcps.edu/
* Virginia Standards of Learning
Communication 5.1 and Writing 5.7
