Building the Transcontinental Railway Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 12 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 31 questions based on a YouTube tutorial video and the history.com website.
Students will first be asked to watch an 8 minute video which will introduce the basic facts of the Transcontinental Railroad (length, dates, meeting point, different companies). The video will also cover the federal governments involvement with the railway (subsidies, economic nationalism) and the eventual economic developments that the railway led to. Following that, students will proceed to the history.com site. A second video and an accompanying article will review the use of Chinese labor during the railways construction, the dangers of working through the mountains, the travel time that the railway would cut from moving across the continent, the spread of easy communication, the creation of standardized time zones, and the eventual meeting of the separate lines at Promontory Point, Utah.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
