Based upon the book, "A Bad Case of Stripes" by David Shannon, this is a story about a girl who is embarassed to let her friends know that she likes lima beans and to be different. The story shows her going through many different changes because of not being true to herself. It does a great job of simultaneously addressing the importance of diversity and the inappropriateness of the bullying behaviors that come with intolerance. Using a 3 component approach to explaining the components of bullying behavior, this PowerPoint presentation will help your students to be able to identify a bullying behaviors and learn how to respond to them. As you know, it is difficult, especially for elementary kids, to figure out if a behavior is, indeed, bullying.
Using this presentation for your guidance lesson, you can easily help students to both value differences and understand the importance of being kind and tolerant of others.
This presentation has 13 slides and includes a link to the book being read by Sean Astin as a part of the SAG Foundation book buddy program. The video runs approximately 12 minutes.
There is an activity included at the end to be done by students at the end of the presentation.
I would schedule 30-45 minutes for this lesson and activity.
The PowerPoint is customizable and includes notes to support you in your lesson including questions and ideas for presentation. The presentation includes both animations and transitions to hold your students' interest. Make your lesson come alive for your students and help them to connect to the concept in a fun way that will help them to remember the important lessons you need for them to remember.
