Bump That Pig!
Two Pre-Primer Sight Word Games
These are great games to teach 10 of the pre-primer words that are necessary for beginning readers.
This is a small group activity for 4 to 5 children.
There are 2 bump games. One game uses the words the, an, my, am, and at. The other game uses the words above in addition to the words see, can, look, is, & here.
Five Word Board
The children will each have a different color marker such as unifix cubes or stackers to cover the words. One game board and one number/word board is needed. I put the number/word board on a small plastic plate stand so that all the children can see it.
The children will take turns rolling either a dot cube or number cube. They will look at the word by the number on the number word board, read it and cover it if they read it. If someone already has a marker covering the word, they may bump that marker off. If they themselves have a marker covering the word, they may add another one on top to secure the word. It may not be bumped off by someone else. If the word rolled is covered and secured already, they lose that turn. If they roll a 6 they are stuck in the muck and lose a turn. When all the words are covered, the child with the most markers on the board wins.
Ten Word Board
This is played the same way except there are 2 words by each number. The child can select which word they want to read. Hopfully they will start to use strategies.
