The following is a common core-based lesson/worksheet that focuses on the music, art, and literature of the Renaissance. This lesson is typically taught over a two-day period (75 minute periods) and follows a lesson introducing humanism and the Renaissance. This worksheet is loaded with a variety of student-centered activities designed to promote active engagement and critical thinking. Several activities include:

• Do now – reviews from previous lesson and appropriately sets up current lesson.
• Discussion about art and music and how it reflects the values and beliefs of society
• Gregorian chant (Middle Ages) vs. Ave Maria (Renaissance music) included with questions – perfectly illustrates the cultural differences between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
• Characteristics of Renaissance Art – How is it humanistic?
• Renaissance Art Analysis – focuses on three class Renaissance paintings
• Primary and secondary source analysis – Renaissance Man, Renaissance literature – Rabelais, Shakespeare and Machiavelli – includes several critical thinking questions.
• Machiavelli activity – analysis of excerpt from The Prince
• Enormous opportunities for discussion.

Turning Point - The Scientific Revolution - Global History Common Core

This worksheet is a two-day common core-based lesson on The Scientific Revolution, an important topic in the Global History curriculum. The worksheet includes a variety of activities that cover the most significant aspects of this world changing event.
Students will
- answer and discuss several critical thinking and thought provoking questions
- complete primary and secondary source readings and answer corresponding questions
- analyze a political cartoon
- participate in a brief play about Galileo
- take notes on the most important information

This is an engaging lesson that can easily be modified for a shorter class period. A link is included to access the political cartoon in question. I have also included an answer key for the notes portion of the lesson.


Protestant Reformation - Global/World History Common Core

The following is a common core-based lesson/worksheet on the Protestant Reformation. This lesson serves as an introduction to the abuses of the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages and the Reformation started by Martin Luther. This lesson contains a variety of student-centered activities designed to develop critical thinking and discussions skills such as:

• Do now reviewing prior knowledge and setting up the lesson
• Students are then given an official looking handout (attached and can be easily altered to fit your particular needs) telling them that they can now purchase points in their average. Sets up an excellent discussion on the fairness of this. It is then revealed that this is just like indulgences in the Middle Ages – Students typically go crazy during and after this activity.
• Secondary source readings with critical thinking and thought provoking questions.
• Primary source readings from the 95 Theses – students must translate and determine Luther’s beliefs.
• Multiple opportunities for class discussion.

This lesson could easily be modified for longer or shorter class periods.


Spread of the Protestant Reformation - Global/World History Common Core

The following is a common core based lesson on the spread of the Protestant Reformation to several areas of Europe particularly to England and Switzerland. This lesson includes a variety of student-centered activities designed to promote critical thinking skills as well as class discussion. Several activities include:

• Do now – students pretend to be three different people and write their reactions to Luther’s ideas.
• Secondary source reading and questions about the reasons the reformation spread.
• Secondary and primary source readings about Henry VIII and John Calvin – many thought provoking questions and what would you do questions follow. – excellent opportunities for class discussion.
• Student generated thesis statements answering the following question, “Was it possible to stop the Reformation once it had started?” Perfect set up for the next lesson on the Catholic Reformation.
• Plus fill-in-the-blank notes and answers

This lesson could easily be modified for longer or shorter class periods.


Counter Reformation - Catholic Church Response to Luther - Global Common Core

The following worksheet is a common core-based lesson focusing on the Catholic Church's response to the Protestant Reformation. This lesson is taught after students are introduced to Martin Luther, the Protestant Reformation, and the spread of the Reformation. This lesson contains several student-centered activities designed to promote active engagement and critical thinking such as:

• Do now designed to review from the previous lesson as well as prepare students for the upcoming activities
• Cooperative learning activity – As representatives of the Catholic Church, students create a list of reforms that will attempt to regain lost followers as well as gain new followers. – Class discussion follows
• Secondary source reading on the Catholic Reformation
• Individually – students will grade the Catholic Reformation, explaining why, and in what ways could their grade be improved.
• Answer the aim.

This lesson could easily be modified for longer or shorter class periods.
