In this bundle, you will find all of my weekly A-Z writing packets! *Plus 182 colorful slides to use as visual aides, at a discounted price! This bundle is a great way to get students comfortable with writing by using a familiar framework! The students become so excited when they are able to tell you what letter we are going to be focusing our writing on next!
With the A-Z writing packets you are still able to stick with the familiar “letter of the week” theme because the weekly writing prompts become progressively more challenging as the students continue through the alphabet. Increasingly more sight words, details, and sentence starters will appear in the packets.
Sight words included in the weekly prompts: the, a, I, see, an, like, is, my, and, to, will, go, in, on, here, it, come, be, are, this, at, has, up, we, said, have, and my. Color, number, and cvc words are also used to provide weekly reading /writing sentence practice.
I have used the A-Z writing packets as a whole group journal writing activity as well as with my small intervention groups.
On the first day, we identify the letter of the week, describe its sound, and name the pictures that begin with that sound. A star is placed next to the vowels as a reminder to discuss their long and short sounds. Then students are instructed to reread and trace the sentence that contains words with that letter. They will also color the illustration that matches the sentence. We continue to present sentences each day for the rest of the week while students reread, trace and color illustrations.
*For a higher level option, I encourage the students that are ready to pick another picture on the page and to use ear (phonetic) spelling to compose additional words or sentences. They are then instructed to color the illustrations that match their additional words/sentences. This process will provide picture cues for students when they go back to reread their own writing.
*I also included extra lined paper to add to the back of each sheet for a higher level option.
*At the end of the week, I have the students look over their writing and fill out the self-assessment checklist provided on the last slide. I then conduct writing conferences throughout the following week and highlight areas for improvement. I also provide the students with a score. This weekly assessment could be used to set in-class goals for improvement and/or a duplicate could be sent home to parents.
*The additional colored version of the A-Z weekly writing packets can be projected on a SMART Board (or other visual aid), for better discussion and guidance in the classroom.
