Robert Edward Lee was born on January 19, 1807 in Stratford, VA. The son of Revolutionary War officer Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III and a top graduate of the United States Military Academy. He was an exceptional officer and combat engineer in the United States Army for 32 years. During this time, he served throughout the United States, distinguished himself during the Mexican–American War, served as Superintendent of the United States Military Academy, and married Mary Custis.

Lee remains a pivotal, controversial, and complicated figure in American history, revered by some, reviled by others, and a central figure in America's history. In Virginia, where Lee was born, fought in the Civil War, and died -- no matter whether he's viewed as a hero who fought brilliantly and valiantly for states' rights or as a traitor bent on protecting his state's right to own slaves -- his legacy looms large.

Ulysses Grant commanded the victorious Union army during the American Civil War, 1861-1865, and served as the 18th U.S. President from 1869 to 1877. An Ohio native, Grant graduated from West Point and fought in the Mexican-American War, 1846-1848.

During the Civil War, Grant, an aggressive and determined leader and was given command of all the U.S. armies. As President, a primary focus of Grant’s administration was Reconstruction, and he worked to reconcile the North and South while also attempting to protect the civil rights of newly freed black slaves.

While Grant was personally honest, some of his associates were corrupt and his administration was tarnished by various scandals. After retiring, Grant invested in a brokerage firm that went bankrupt, costing him his life savings. He spent his final days penning his memoirs, which were published the year he died and proved a critical and financial success.

Ultimately, Grant remains somewhat of an enigma in American history. He was such a successful general that his failings as President seem hard to comprehend. He was a natural leader on the battlefield but was not an especially effective leader of his country.
