As queen of ancient Egypt, Cleopatra is one of the most famous female rulers in history. The stories and myths surrounding Cleopatra and her life have captivated historians, storytellers, and the general public. Her affair with Marc Antony and its end became the inspiration for William Shakespeare’s play Antony and Cleopatra (1607). Cleopatra's tragic life inspired a number of books, and movies.

Her story resonates because of what she represented in such a male-dominated society. In an era when Egypt was broiled by internal and external battles, Cleopatra held the country together and proved to be as powerful a leader as any of her male counterparts.

The romance between Antony and Cleopatra might have changed the world. If Antony had succeeded in winning sole control of Rome with Cleopatra as his queen, he could have changed the course of the Roman Empire, making the world we live in today a different place. Their mutual suicide in 30 BC, 11 years after it started, nullified what could have been.

The Roman politician and general Mark Antony (was an ally of Julius Caesar and the main rival of his successor Octavian (later Augustus). With those 2 men he was integral to Rome’s transition from republic to empire. His romantic and political alliance with the Egyptian queen Cleopatra was his ultimate undoing, and centuries later provided inspiration for artists from Shakespeare to Cecil B. DeMille.

After Antony’s death his honors were all revoked, his statues removed. Cicero, Antony’s great rival in the senate, decreed that no one in the dead general’s family would ever bear the name Mark Antony again.

Note: Although Mark Antony died fighting Octavian's efforts to become Rome's sole dynastic monarch, 3 of the first 5 Roman emperors—Caligula, Claudius and Nero—were Antony’s direct descendants.
