King Nebuchadnezzar II is known as the most famous and important king of the Neo-Babylonian or Chaldean Empire. His father, King Nabopolassar had defeated the Assyrians with the help of the Medes and liberated Babylonia from Assyrian rule. This allowed King Nebuchadnezzar to inherit a stable kingdom and ample wealth on which to build; an opportunity for greatness which Nebuchadnezzar took full advantage of.
Nebuchadnezzar restored old religious monuments, improved canals and built a Babylon into a beautiful city, but his best-known accomplishment was his palace, a place used for administrative, religious, ceremonial, as well as residential purposes, especially the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
When the king could not sleep, he asked Daniel, to interpret his dreams which his prophets could not do. Impressed with Daniel, he promoted him. But Daniel revealed to him God’s upcoming punishment nut the king ignored it.
The book of Daniel also describes how God humbled Nebuchadnezzar for boasting. He was plagued with a seven-year bout of insanity and lived like an animal during that time. This was widely seen as punishment of God for his refusal to acknowledge God.
It was Nebuchadnezzar who threw Daniel, the Jewish prophet into the den of lions, only to be spared from death. He also he tried to kill Shadrach, Meshach and Abedenego into a fiery furnace for not bowing down to him. They too, miraculously escaped death.

According to legend, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, considered one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, were built in the 6th century BCE by King Nebuchadnezzar II for his homesick wife, Amytis.
As a Persian princess, Amytis missed the wooded mountains of her youth so Nebuchadnezzar built her an oasis in the desert, a building covered with exotic trees and plants, tiered so that it resembled a mountain. The only problem is that archaeologists are not sure that the Hanging Gardens ever really existed.
