The Byzantine Empire, or Eastern Roman Empire, was the predominantly Greek-speaking continuation of the eastern part of the Roman Empire during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Its capital city was Constantinople, originally founded as Byzantium.

The origins of the great civilization known as the Byzantine Empire can be traced to 330 A.D., when the Roman emperor Constantine I dedicated a “new Rome” on the site of the ancient Greek colony of Byzantium. It survived the fragmentation and fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD and continued to exist for an additional 1,000 years until it fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1453.

During the 1,125 years, of its existence, the empire was the most powerful economic, cultural, and military force in Europe. It spawned a rich tradition of art, literature and learning while serving as a military buffer between the states of Europe and invasion from Asia.

The Byzantine Empire finally fell in 1453, after an Ottoman army stormed Constantinople during the reign of Constantine XI.

The Byzantine Empire existed for nearly 1,125 years, and it’s one of the greatest empires of all time. It was the Eastern part of the Roman Empire with Constantinople—later Byzantium, and Istanbul today as its capitol.

Constantinople became the center of a vibrant society that preserved Greek and Roman traditions while much of Western Europe slipped into the Dark Ages. The Byzantine Empire protected Western Europe from Islamic invaders and served as the precursor to the Renaissance.

From A.D. 500 to A.D. 1200, Byzantium was the wealthiest nation in Europe and western Asia. Its standard of living was unrivaled by other nations in Europe, and it led much of the world in art, science, trade, and architecture.

The Byzantine Empire finally fell in 1453, after an Ottoman army stormed Constantinople during the reign of Constantine XI.
