The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery stands atop a hill overlooking WDC. On March 4, 1921, Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American soldier from World War I in the plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater. Inscribed on the back of the Tomb are the words: Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God.
THE TOMB HAS BEEN GUARDED 24/7 SINCE 1937. Tomb Guards come from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment "The Old Guard". Serving the U.S. since 1784, the Old Guard is the oldest active infantry unit in the military. They keep watch over the memorial every minute of every day, including when the cemetery is closed and in inclement weather.
The scene that defines Arlington National Cemetery is the Caisson Platoon of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, aka the Old Guard, the oldest infantry unit in the United States Army. They conduct one of the most solemn activities in the United States, carrying the remains of a U.S. serviceman to his or her final resting place, a task that this unit will conduct 8 times a day every day of the year.
