100 years after the time of David had passed, a new king named Ahab assumed the throne around 870 BC. Ahab, the Bible says, did more to provoke God to anger than all the kings of Israel who had come before him (1 Kings 16:33). The apostasy during Ahab’s reign was the result of many years of corrupt kings and increasing evil, until evil filled the land.

Most the people had yielded their worship to the Canaanite god’s Baal and Ashtoreth. Still, God had declared that there were 7,000 persons in Israel who had not worshipped Baal during that very wicked time (1 Kings 19:18). Earlier, God had sent warnings and waited patiently for His people to separate themselves from the pagan influences that surrounded them and to return to true worship (1 Kings 14:6-16). Now God was going to bring a severe judgment on the nation to stir them to action. God explains, “Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7). To announce the punishment and warn the nation to change its ways, God sent a messenger, Elijah the prophet.

Elijah did his job quite well. He challenged the evil King Ahab and his wife to repent but they did not. He successfully challenged the prophets of Baal on Mt Carmel to prove their gods were false and he even brought a young boy back to life even as he was fleeing for his own.

Elijah was the greatest prophet for the Israelites. He was one of 2 people who never died but was brought to heaven in a flaming chariot. John the Baptist, was compared to Elijah as he served as the forerunner of Christ. Elijah was with Jesus and Moses at Jesus transfiguration and it is believed that he is one of the two witnesses described in the book of Revelation at the end of time.

Elisha was an Old Testament prophet who lived around 800 BC, a time when God involved Himself in a very direct way with the people and the leadership of ancient Israel. Around this period, God sent at least 30 prophets, between the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah, to turn their citizens away from idolatry and other sins.

As Elijah was nearing the end of his ministry, Elijah was directed by God to seek his successor. Elijah found Elisha out in a field plowing on his father’s farm with a team of 12 yoke of oxen. Elijah placed his mantle on Elisha’s shoulders, and Elisha understood this symbolic act as being appointed to the role of a prophet. Without hesitation, Elisha accepted the call to service.

Elisha’s prophetic career, likely lasted some 50 years, as it extended over the reign’s of 4 kings of Israel: Jehoram, Jehu, Jehoahaz and Joash. The ministry of Elisha was different from that of Elijah. Elijah was commissioned to deliver fearless messages of condemnation and judgment to the king and to the people, warning them to turn from sin. Elisha’s ministry was to build on the work that Elijah had begun by teaching the people God’s ways.

Throughout his ministry, he showed a deep concern for the well-being of the nation and its people. Elisha protected the kings and armies of Israel. He anointed two kings, Jehu and Hazael, King of Damascus. Like his mentor, Elisha demanded rejection of idols and faithfulness to the true God. His miracles, both spectacular and minor, demonstrated that God can change history as well as the everyday lives of his followers.
