One night Abram after rescuing Lot and his family may have been just lying on his bed thinking about all that had just taken place and what the future would be. Whatever he was thinking about—it brought fear into his heart. The Lord knew how fearful Abram was and wanted to comfort him. Abram saw the Lord in a vision and heard His voice saying, "FEAR NOT, Abram, I am your SHIELD, and your very great REWARD."

But what did the Lord mean when He spoke of a REWARD? Abram already had everything he needed. He had great wealth and fame. The only thing Abram did not have was a son, and he was much too old to have children. In fact, Abram was already old enough to be a great-grandfather!

He prayed, "O Sovereign LORD, what can You give me? I have no children because You have chosen not to give me any, so who will become my heir? What good is all this wealth if there is no one to inherit it. "NO," the LORD continued. "This man will not be your heir. You will have a son of your own." Then the LORD took Abram outside. "LOOK up at the heavens and COUNT the stars if you can. Your children and grandchildren will be as numerous as all the stars in the sky above."

Abraham loved God very much and prayed to God every day. He did his best to obey God. In turn, God was pleased with Abraham and blessed him by giving him lots of land and large flocks of sheep and herds of cattle with many servants to help care for the land and the animals. He became the wealthiest man in the world at that time.

BUT...there was one thing Abraham wanted more than anything else in the WHOLE world . . . .. . . Abraham wanted his wife, Sarah, to have a SON. Then God said, "Your descendants will be like the stars. There will be so many, they will not be able to be counted." THAT had been a wonderful promise, and Abraham BELIEVED that it would happen, because GOD SAID IT WOULD. But that promise had been made SOOOOOO long ago. "WHEN would it ever happen?" he wondered.

One Day it happened JUST AS GOD HAD PROMISED. A cute little baby boy was born to Abraham and Sarah. Abraham named the baby Isaac, which means laughter. The baby brought much joy and laughter to Abraham and Sarah. They loved baby Isaac very, very much. They were so happy that God had kept His promise.
