100 years after the time of David had passed, a new king named Ahab assumed the throne around 870 BC. Ahab, the Bible says, did more to provoke God to anger than all the kings of Israel who had come before him (1 Kings 16:33). The apostasy during Ahab’s reign was the result of many years of corrupt kings and increasing evil, until evil filled the land.

Most the people had yielded their worship to the Canaanite god’s Baal and Ashtoreth. Still, God had declared that there were 7,000 persons in Israel who had not worshipped Baal during that very wicked time (1 Kings 19:18). Earlier, God had sent warnings and waited patiently for His people to separate themselves from the pagan influences that surrounded them and to return to true worship (1 Kings 14:6-16). Now God was going to bring a severe judgment on the nation to stir them to action. God explains, “Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7). To announce the punishment and warn the nation to change its ways, God sent a messenger, Elijah the prophet.

Elijah did his job quite well. He challenged the evil King Ahab and his wife to repent but they did not. He successfully challenged the prophets of Baal on Mt Carmel to prove their gods were false and he even brought a young boy back to life even as he was fleeing for his own.

Elijah was the greatest prophet for the Israelites. He was one of 2 people who never died but was brought to heaven in a flaming chariot. John the Baptist, was compared to Elijah as he served as the forerunner of Christ. Elijah was with Jesus and Moses at Jesus transfiguration and it is believed that he is one of the two witnesses described in the book of Revelation at the end of time.

King David had been absent from the scene of Hebrew history for about 135 years when King Ahab came to the throne. His great kingdom, enlarged and more richly endowed by his son Solomon, had been fractured into 2 weakened fragments. The southern kingdom of Judah was being ruled by his descendants. The northern kingdom of Israel suffered under a succession of wicked men at the helm.

Ahab is introduced to the pages of Scripture with these shocking words: “And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord more than all who were before him” (1 Kgs. 16:30). He had the dubious distinction of being the most wicked king who reigned over Israel up until his day. Ahab decided that he needed an alliance with this neighboring nation, so he made a treaty with the king of Phoenicia and sealed it by marrying his daughter. That is how Jezebel happened to move to Samaria.

Jezebel brought a religious fanaticism with her. She was headstrong, self-willed, domineering woman, and with a moral weakling for a husband, she had little trouble getting her way. She got him to build a house for Baal beside the palace in Samaria, as well as an idol of the fertility goddess Ashtoreth. Then she brought 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Ashtoreth from Phoenicia, housed them in the palace, and fed them in royal style. Their duties were to promote the worship of Baal and Ashtoreth throughout the land.

It was Elijah was the first to oppose her, but the nation grew more wicked. Their deeds finally ended in a violent death for each.
