Jesus, the Christ was born circa 6 B.C. in Bethlehem and founded Christianity. His life is recorded in the New Testament, more a theological document than a biography. According to Christians, Jesus is considered the incarnation of God; a claim he confirmed. That he was born of a virgin, Mary when conceived by the Holy Spirit, lived a sinless life, and was the Messiah as prophesied by Old Testament Jewish prophets.

He died as God’s sacrifice for the sins of all people, rose from the dead after three days, ascended back into heaven after 40 days, and promised to return to earth to take his followers to heaven and live eternally.

On the day he ascended back to heaven, the disciples were watching him ascend, two angels dressed in white robes stood beside them and asked why they were looking into the sky.

The angels said: "This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." (Acts 1:11) At that, the disciples walked back to Jerusalem to the upstairs room where they had been staying and held a prayer meeting. Since that time, Christians throughout the world look forward to the return of Christ and the promise of eternal life with him in heaven!

The Jews believed strongly in a Messiah who would bring in the Messianic Age by fulfilling the messianic prophecies Isaiah and Ezekiel. This Messiah, will be a paternal descendant of King David. He is expected to return the Jews to their homeland and rebuild the Temple, reign as King, and usher in an era of peace and understanding where "the knowledge of God" fills the earth, leading the nations to "end up recognizing the wrongs they did Israel.”

The Jews have never wavered in this belief and are fiercely loyal to this belief even today. The Jews of Jesus day rejected him as the promised Messiah citing the fact that: Jesus lived while the Second Temple was standing, and not while the Jews were exiled, Jesus never reigned as a king, and there was no subsequent era of peace or broad knowledge; Jesus died without completing or even accomplishing part of any of the messianic tasks, instead promising a Second Coming; Rather than being redeemed, the Jews were subsequently exiled from Israel. Jewish scholars and rabbis who were contemporaries of Jesus, rejected Him as the Messiah. They were willing to do anything, including arranging for his murder, to protect those beliefs.

The Jewish religious establishment wanted desperately to get rid of Jesus, but they had a major problem in doing so. Jesus was enormously popular with the common people, he had a very public ministry and many eyewitnesses to his miracles, he had healed the sick and raised the dead and people knew it. He had developed a strong following of avid believers, The Romans occupied their country and only Rome could approve executions. Their faith only allowed death for those charged with blasphemy.

So, they schemed: They convinced the Romans that Jesus had declared Himself to be King and therefore a threat to overthrow Rome and that Jesus had blasphemed by saying that He was God, a charge punishable by death and they needed Rome to carry it out.
