In 1783, the war was over but the country was very week and its ability to survive was questionable. There was no effective government in place to meet the needs of a growing country. The Articles of Confederation were not working and it was clear that change was needed.
At the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention, the Federalists and Anti-Federalists locked horns over the whether it is better to “update” the Articles of Confederation or write a new constitution. The Federalist and the Anti-Federalist debated on the proper way forward for the country.
This power point covers the key differences in the thinking of the Federalists, who wanted a strong federal government and the Anti-federalists who did not. In the end, the United States had a new Constitution that is in effect until this day.

This era saw the adoption of the U.S. Constitution and the growth of a strong centralized government. This period created a whole new vocabulary to describe what was happening. In government.
