The French Revolution was an influential period of social and political upheaval in France that lasted from 1789 until 1799, and was partially carried forward by Napoleon during the later expansion of the French Empire.
The Revolution overthrew the monarchy, established a republic, experienced violent periods of political turmoil, and finally culminated in a dictatorship by Napoleon that rapidly brought many of its principles to Western Europe and beyond.
Inspired by liberal and radical ideas, the Revolution profoundly altered the course of modern history, triggering the global decline of absolute monarchies while replacing them with republics. Through the Revolutionary Wars, it unleashed a wave of global conflicts that extended from the Caribbean to the Middle East.
Historians widely regard the Revolution as one of the most important events in human history. The French Revolution certainly swept away the old regime. Though they had not intended it when they had helped spark the revolution, all of the perquisites of the nobility were swept away.
In France, as well as much of Europe, there would remain an admiration for the ideals of the revolution, embodied in the slogan, "liberté, egalité, fraternité". Revolution would periodically sweep the continent. Freedom would spread, even to the dark reaches of Russia where the serfs would be liberated even before the slaves in the United States.

The Reign of Terror (also known as The Terror), was a period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution, incited by conflict between 2 rival political factions, the Girondins and the Jacobins, and marked by mass executions of "enemies of the revolution".
The guillotine (called the "National Razor") became the symbol of the revolutionary cause, strengthened by a string of executions. The death toll ranged in the tens of thousands, with 16,594 executed by guillotine (2,639 in Paris), and another 25,000 in summary executions across France. Notable executions included:
King Louis XVI
Louis Philippe II Duke of Orléans
Robespierre emerged a leader and despot who thought anything was justified when it came to the revolution's rights. He changed his views on the death penalty, saying it was justified against enemies of the Republic. He reinstalled censorship, in the press and acted for a secular state. He changed the calendar and in November 24, 1793 he set the Revolutionary calendar as the new benchmark.
In July 1794, Robespierre was finally accused of dictatorship and tyranny and evicted from the Convention. The members voted for his simultaneous eviction and execution, without allowing him to defend himself. The following day, Robespierre was beheaded to an ovation by the people of Paris. His death was the symbol of the Reign of Terror's end and the end of the democratic movement at the same time.
