Zachary Taylor was the 12th President of the United States, Before his presidency, Taylor was a career officer in the United States Army, rising to the rank of major general. Taylor's status as a national hero as a result of his victories in the Mexican-American War won him election to the White House despite his vague political beliefs. His top priority as president was preserving the Union, but he died 17 months into his term, before making any progress on the status of slavery, which had been inflaming tensions in Congress.
Zachary Taylor served in the army for some 4 decades, commanding troops in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War of 1832, and the second of the Seminole Wars of 1835-1842. He became a full-fledged war hero through his service in the Mexican-American War, which broke out in 1846 after the U.S. annexation of Texas.
Elected president in 1848, Taylor entered the White House at a time when the issue of slavery and its extension into the new western territories) had caused a major rift between the North and South.
