Product Description

Harry S. Truman was born in Missouri on May 8, 1884. He was Franklin Roosevelt’s vice president for just 82 days before Roosevelt died and Truman became the 33rd president. In his first months in office he dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, ending World War II. His policy of communist containment started the Cold War, and he initiated U.S. involvement in the Korean War. Truman left office in 1953 and died in 1972.

In March of 1952, Truman announced that he would not run for reelection. He gave his support to Governor Adlai Stevenson, the democratic nominee, though Stevenson was distancing himself from the president because of his poor approval rating.

After retiring from the presidency, Truman returned to Independence, MO, where he wrote his memoirs, oversaw the construction of his presidential library and took long walks. He died on December 26, 1972, and is buried next to Bess in the courtyard of the Truman Library.

In the election of 1948, President Harry S. Truman, who had succeeded President Roosevelt after his death in 1945, stood for reelection on the Democratic ticket with Alben Barkley of KY as his running mate. The Republican slate consisted of 2 prominent governors: Thomas E. Dewey of NY and Earl Warren of CA. Results were uncertain to the last minute. A well-known photograph shows Truman the day after the election smiling broadly and holding aloft a newspaper with the headline Dewey Wins!

When President Harry S. Truman declined to run for a 3rd term in 1952, the Democratic convention nominated Governor Adlai E. Stevenson of IL for president on the 3rd ballot. Senator John Sparkman of AL was chosen as his running mate. The Republican fight for the nomination was a conflict between the isolationists, represented by Senator Robert Taft of OH, and the more liberal internationalists, who backed World War II General Dwight D. Eisenhower, then president of Columbia University. Eisenhower won the nomination. Richard M. Nixon, an anticommunist senator from CA, was the vice-presidential candidate.
