There was a growing attitude in the country that many embraced called, Manifest Destiny. This concept embraced the idea that the United States not only could, but was destined to, stretch from coast to coast and served to hasten western expansion. Manifest Destiny expressed the belief that it was Anglo-Saxon Americans’ providential mission to expand their civilization and institutions across the breadth of North America.

The United States gained most of its land through expansion between 1818 and 1853. Each acquisition was different and included annexations, peaceful treaties, a treaty to end a war, and a purchase. Expansion was brought about by: The Treaty of 1818; from Britain, The Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819; from Spain, The Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842; from Britain, The Texas Annexation of 1845; by US Congress, The Oregon Treaty of 1846; from Britain, Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1846; Mexican Cession and The Gadsden Purchase of 1853; from Mexico.

The issue of slavery took on vital importance as the Northern and Southern states wanted statehood status be tied to whether a state was joining the Union as a “slave” state or a “non slave” state. The highly industrialized Northern states objected to slavery in its territories; whereas, the agricultural Southern states totally dependent on slave labor.

The country eventually disintegrated into Civil War over states right with the issues of slavery at the core. Before the war, there were numerous attempts to create compromises to satisfy the issues, but all ended in failure. The most notable legislation regarding admission into the Union was consideration to accept the State of MO into the Union. Tensions reached a boiling point after MO’s 1819 request for admission to the Union as a slave state, which threatened to upset the delicate balance between slave states and free states.
