The bloodiest conflict in history, World War II consumed the globe from 1939 to 1945. World War II was fought predominantly in Europe and across the Pacific and eastern Asia, and pitted the Axis powers of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan against the Allied nations of Great Britain, France, China, the United States, and the Soviet Union.
While the Axis powers enjoyed early success, they were gradually beaten back, with both Italy and Germany falling to Allied troops and Japan surrendering after the United States dropped the atomic bombs.
The seeds of World War II were actually sown in the Treaty of Versailles which ended World War I. The Treaty of Versailles placed heavy burdens on Germany that they could not fulfill. The tone of the treaty was that of punishment and the punishment was severe.
Crippled economically by the terms of the treaty and the Great Depression, Germany come to embrace Fascism and the Nazi Party, led by charismatic leader Adolf Hitler. Riding the wave of the rise of Fascism was Benito Mussolini, who rose to power in Italy in 1922.

After World War I, Japan sought to expand its colonial empire in Asia. As the military exerted control over the government, Japan began a program of expansionism, first occupying Manchuria in 1931, and then invading China in1937. Japan prosecuted a brutal war against the Chinese, earning condemnation from the U. S. and the European powers. In an effort to stop the fighting, the U.S. and Britain imposed iron and oil embargoes against Japan.
Needing these materials to continue the war, Japan sought to acquire them through conquest. Japan launched a surprise attack against U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, as well as against British colonies in the region.
A valuable ally during World War I, the European powers and the United States recognized Japan as a colonial power after the war. In Japan, this led to the rise of ultra-right wing and nationalist leaders, such as Fumimaro Konoe and Sadao Araki, who advocated uniting Asia under the rule of the emperor. This philosophy gained ground during the 1920s and 1930s as Japan needed increasingly more natural resources to support its industrial growth.
With the onset of the Great Depression, Japan moved towards a fascist system with the army exerting growing influence over the emperor and government.
