Franklin Roosevelt was elected in November of 1944 to the office of president of the United States. Harry Truman served as his vice president just 82 days before Roosevelt died of a massive stroke. Truman was sworn in as president on April 12, 1945. With no prior experience in foreign policy, Truman was thrust into the role of commander in chief and charged with ending a world war.

In the 6 six months of his term, he announced the Germans’ surrender, dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, ending World War II, and signed the charter ratifying the United Nations. He is best remembered for his decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan, ending World War II. Truman always maintained this was the correct decision and saved countless American lives.

His policy of communist containment started the Cold War, and he initiated U.S. involvement in the Korean War. Truman left office in 1953 and died in 1972.

Douglas MacArthur was born in Little Rock, AR, on January 26, 1880. After graduating from West Point in 1903, he fought in World War I, and in World War II was the commander of Allied forces in the Pacific.

A Japanese invasion of the Philippines in 1941 drove MacArthur’s forces from the country, but in the years that followed, MacArthur launched a number of successful offensive operations against the Japanese military in the region.

During this time, he was frequently and openly critical of his superiors’ decision to focus military resources on the war in Europe rather than in the Pacific. When he criticized President Harry Truman's handling of the Korean War, he was relieved of his command.
