Like most of the German leaders who had come before him, Adolf Hitler had a fascination with the British. By the late 1800s, the British Empire was the envy of the world and the focal point of the world's diplomatic and financial activity. For the better part of three centuries, people from the small island nation of Britain had managed to rule a fifth of the world by means of an all-powerful navy, a well-trained army, and cagey diplomatic gamesmanship.

Watching from the sidelines, the Germans both admired and envied the British, and wanted very much to create an empire of their own. In August 1914, German solders marched off to war in Europe, believing that would happen for them.

Power point #1 is entitled, World War II - European Theater - How World War II Began and contains 17 slides and covers the following:

Just before 8 a.m. on December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, HI. The barrage lasted just two hours, but it was devastating. The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including 8 enormous battleships, and almost 200 airplanes.

More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan; Congress approved his declaration with just one dissenting vote.

Three days later, Japanese allies Germany and Italy also declared war on the United States, and again Congress reciprocated. More than two years into the conflict, America had finally joined World War II.
