By the time FDR assumed the presidency the economy in the U.S. was a total disaster with 25% of the population unemployed! Former President Hoover’s response was anemic and his reassurances were hollow.

Hoover, who had formerly served as U.S. secretary of commerce, believed that government should not directly intervene in the economy, and that it did not have the responsibility to create jobs or provide economic relief for its citizens. Despite assurances from Hoover and other leaders that the crisis would run its course, matters continued to get worse over the next three years.

Roosevelt was a progressive who believed in active government and experimentation. His approach to the Great Depression changed the role of the U.S. government by increasing its power in unprecedented ways. Roosevelt gathered a "brain trust“ of professors, lawyers, business leaders, and social welfare proponents to advise him, especially on economic issues.

While Herbert Hoover was president, the US economy was in free fall. The unemployment rate was above 25%, business were failing, farms were closing and there appeared to be no end in sight. Hoover’s response was anemic and his reassurances were hollow.

Hoover, believed that government should not directly intervene in the economy, and that it did not have the responsibility to create jobs or provide economic relief for its citizens. Despite assurances from Hoover and other leaders that the crisis would run its course, matters continued to get worse over the next 3 years.

When FDR was elected president, he implemented an aggressive and unprecedented approach to right the economy that he called the New Deal. He believed in active government and experimentation.

Lead by his wife Eleanor, whom the American public loved, Roosevelt gathered a "brain trust” of professors, lawyers, business leaders, and social welfare proponents to advise him, especially on economic issues. He implemented many far reaching changes during the first 100 days in office, changes that would profoundly affect Americans in the decades to follow.
