In the 1760’s, the American colonies lived under British rule and were loyal to England. Trade was healthy and the colonies prospered and grew into large cities such as Boston, Philadelphia and New York City.

Life was fine until England who had fought a long and victorious war with France and had accumulated a lot of debt. King George put an aggressive tax plan in place requiring the colonies to purchase all manufactured goods from England. This tax enraged the colonists, who had no representation in Parliament. They fought back by smuggling goods to avoid the tax.
