According to the gospels, Jesus died less than 6 hours after he was hung on the cross. Relatively speaking, he died much sooner than most who were crucified. Victims of crucifixions usually lived much longer, from 24 hours to several days. Mark 15:44 says that the Roman governor Pontius Pilate was very surprised when he learned that Jesus was already dead. But those events that took place during those 6 hours changed the world forever!

Five natural phenomenon occurred that convinced the citizens that something powerful had occurred. As the life flowed out of His body, Jesus demonstrated complete control of his life until He was ready to give it up, however briefly.

As recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the Holy Bible, Jesus Christ was mocked, scorned, and tortured before he was finally crucified. His suffering was beyond understanding as he carried his cross up the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem to the place of crucifixion. He was nailed to His cross, and hung between two common criminals, but before He died, he spoke seven times before he died!

The following is Jesus’s last seven words he spoke while hanging on the cross, recorded in the Bible. Jesus was obedient to His Father to the end, and his final word before his death on the Cross was a prayer to His Father.

No wonder the Roman Centurion was blown away! "Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, "Certainly this man was innocent" (Luke 23:47).

End of Presentation

Much has been made about the people who abandoned Jesus during His final days on earth, especially his closest followers, the remaining 11 chosen disciples. Only John was there. The Bible does not explain why the disciples were not there. We can only assume they were afraid for their lives or had blended into the big crowd of onlookers.

But at the crucifixion, the Bible records only a few close friends there to support Jesus and does not name several others who were assumed to be present but not confirmed as present. Both groups are named in the body of the presentation. Luke, declares the presence of great multitudes of people.

Standing back and gazing out upon that mixed multitude, we notice the women, the soldiers, the malefactors, the centurion, the chief priests, the members of the Sanhedrin, the group of His own disciples, and in addition to these, the vast multitudes of people from the whole surrounding country.

All sorts and conditions of men are gathered to the Cross, representative crowds, the whole scene being a picture and a prophecy of how, through all the centuries, every sort and condition would be gathered to the uplifted Cross of the Son of man.
