Chuck Yeager was an American test pilot who was the first person to break the sound barrier, the point where a speeding object (such as an airplane) passes the speed of sound. Yeager made his history-setting flight on Oct. 14, 1947 in an airplane he dubbed “Glamorous Glennis,” after his wife. The Bell X-1 rocket plane (which today hangs in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum) passed Mach 1 following a drop from a B-29 airplane.

The monumental "top secret" event was kept classified until 1948, but once it hit the public airwaves, Yeager became a celebrity. He also received a prestigious aviation award called the Collier Trophy, which called his flight the greatest achievement in aviation since the Wright brothers first took flight in 1903.

John Glenn was a military pilot who was selected in 1959 for Project Mercury astronaut training. He became a backup pilot for Alan B. Shepard Jr. and Virgil I. Grissom, who made the first 2 U.S. suborbital flights into space. Glenn was selected for the 1st orbital flight, and in 1962, aboard Friendship 7, he made 3 orbits around Earth.

After retiring from the military in January 1,1965, he became a businessman and served 4 terms in the United States Congress. On October 29, 1998, Glenn made a return to space on the space shuttle Discovery to research aging and space travel. The following year, he retired from the Senate.

After a few failed attempts, Glenn was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974. The OH Democrat held posts on several committees, including the Committee on Government Affairs. Outspoken on many issues, Glenn campaigned for more funds for space exploration, science and education. In 1984, he even made a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.
