George Walker Bush is an American politician and businessman who served as the 43rd President of the United States from 2001 to 2009, and the 46th Governor of TX from 1995 to 2000.
He married Laura Welch in 1977 and ran unsuccessfully for the House of Representatives shortly thereafter. He later co-owned the Texas Rangers baseball team before defeating Ann Richards in the 1994 Texas gubernatorial election. He narrowly won the Electoral College vote in 2000, in one of the closest and most controversial elections in American history.
In the first 2 years of his presidency, George W. Bush enjoyed a political majority in both Congressional houses but faced a strongly divided government. At times, his political rhetoric fueled this divide. Taking a budget surplus left by the previous Democratic administration, Bush pushed through a $1.35 trillion tax cut to stimulate the economy, but critics contended it favored the wealthy. His administration prompted further controversy when he announced the U.S. would not abide by the Kyoto Protocol for reducing green-house gas emissions, citing potential harm to the U.S. economy.
On September 11, 2001, Al Qaeda terrorists hijacked 4 U.S. commercial jetliners. 3 of them hit their targets in NY and WDC. A 4th plane crashed into a farmer’s field in PA. The war on terror had begun, and President George W. Bush promised the American people that he would do all he could to prevent another terrorist attack.
A comprehensive strategy was formed with the creation of the Homeland Security Department, the Patriot Act and the authorization of intelligence gathering that, for a time, included monitoring international phone calls made by U.S. citizens. The Bush administration also built international coalitions to seek out and destroy Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations in Afghanistan, where the ruling Taliban government was said to be harboring Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. As the conflict raged on, United States military forces in Afghanistan began transferring Taliban fighters and suspected Al Qaeda members to a special prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, a permanent U.S. naval base.

The current generation’s “defining moment” took place on a Tuesday morning, when Islamic extremists brainwashed by Osama bin Laden hijacked 4 commercial passenger jets and deliberately flew them into major American landmarks. Their sole intent was indiscriminate mass murder, for the purpose of causing as much physical, emotional, mental, psychological and financial harm on America as they possibly could.
On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in NYC, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside WDC, and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
Often referred to as 9/11, the attacks resulted in extensive death and destruction, triggering major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism.

Hurricane Katrina was the 11th named storm and 5th hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the 5 deadliest hurricanes, in the history of the United States. The storm is currently ranked as the 3rd most intense United States land-falling tropical cyclone, behind only the 1935 Labor Day hurricane and Hurricane Camille in 1969.
Overall, at least 1,245 people died in the hurricane and subsequent floods, making it the deadliest United States hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. Total property damage was estimated at $108 billion, roughly 4 times the damage wrought by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
In all, Hurricane Katrina killed nearly 2,000 people and affected some 90,000 square miles of the United States. Hundreds of thousands of evacuees scattered far and wide. Today, after years of recovery and rebuilding efforts, people along the Gulf Coast have made great strides in returning to life as usual even as they continue to rebuild.
