James Bowie was an American frontiersman, slave trader, smuggler, Indian fighter and soldier in the Texas Revolution. He was among the defenders at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, where he perished along with all of his comrades.

Bowie was an interesting man in his time, a renowned hothead, brawler and troublemaker who went to TX to escape his creditors in the USA. He had become famous due to his fights and his legendary knife, and once fighting broke out in TX, he soon became known as a solid leader of men with a cool head under fire.

His lasting fame, however, came about as a result of his presence at the fateful Battle of the Alamo. In life he was a con man and slave trader: in death he became a great hero, and today he is revered in TX.

William Barret Travis was an American teacher, lawyer and soldier. As a young man, he immigrated to TX, where he soon became embroiled in the fight for independence from Mexico. He was in command of the Texan forces at the Battle of the Alamo, where he was killed along with all of his men. According to legend, he drew a line in the sand and challenged the defenders of the Alamo to cross it and fight to the death: whether this actually happened is not certain. He is considered a great hero in Texas.

Travis showed himself to be a capable commander and brave soldier when it counted. He held the defenders together in the face of overwhelming odds and did what he could to defend the Alamo. In part because of his discipline and work, the Mexicans paid very dearly for their victory that March day: most historians put the casualty count at around 600 Mexican soldiers to some 200 Texan defenders. He showed true leadership qualities and might have gone far in post-independence TX politics had he survived.

Power point presentation #3, Famous Americans - William Travis contains 15 slides and covers the following:
