Alvin Cullum York, known also by his rank, Sergeant York, was one of the most decorated American soldiers in World War I. He received the Medal of Honor for leading an attack on a German machine gun nest, taking 32 machine guns, killing 20 German soldiers, and capturing 132 others. This action occurred during the United States-led portion of the broader Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France masterminded by Marshal Ferdinand Foch to breach the Hindenburg line and make the opposing German forces surrender.

For his achievements, York was promoted to sergeant and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Remaining with his unit for the final weeks of the war, his decoration was upgraded to the Medal of Honor which he received on April 18, 1919.

In addition to the Medal of Honor, York was presented with the French Croix de Guerre and Legion of Honor as well as the Italian Croce de Guera. Arriving back in the United States in late May, York was hailed as a hero and received ticker tape parade in NYC.

General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing graduated from West Point in 1886, at the age of 26, and started his military career fighting American Indians, including the Apache and the Lakota tribes. When he was 30, he was an officer in the famous Wounded Knee battle in South Dakota, where hundreds of Lakota Indians were massacred by the U.S. military.

Although many people think that his nickname, Black Jack, was some kind of tribute, it was actually a put-down. Pershing had served with the buffalo soldiers in the famous 10th Cavalry unit, which was comprised of segregated African-American soldiers. He was derided for having “ridden with the blacks,” and so was nicknamed Black Jack.

The success of American troops during World War I was largely credited to Pershing's leadership and he returned to the United States as a hero.
