Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was King of the Franks who united most of Western Europe during the early Middle Ages and laid the foundations for modern France and Germany. From 800 he became the first Holy Roman Emperor, the first recognized emperor in Western Europe since the collapse of the Western Roman Empire three centuries earlier.

Alfred the Great successfully defended his kingdom against the Viking attempt at conquest, uniting much of the individual English kingdoms under one rule in the process. For his military skill, his administrative acumen, his promotion of learning and his achievement in uniting virtually all of England, Alfred is the only English king to be tagged "the Great.” A devout Christian, Alfred had a reputation as a learned and merciful man of a gracious and level-headed nature who encouraged education and improved his kingdom's legal system, military structure and his people's quality of life.

William the Conqueror’s place in English history is assured, as he completed one of the few successful conquests of Normandy, and transforming the makeup of the aristocracy, the pattern of the land, and the nature of culture for centuries. William transformed the territory into the most powerful north French holding, creating tensions between the crowns of England and France which would also last for centuries.
