After some 600,000 American men had died of wounds, or by grossly unsanitary medical practice, Lincoln gave his second inaugural address, the famous “charity for all” speech, on March 4, 1865, one month before his death. There is a photograph of him giving this speech, which also shows John Wilkes Booth standing above and behind him, on a balcony.

On April 14, Booth, himself a well-known actor at the time, masterminded the simultaneous assassination of Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward. By murdering the president and two of his possible successors, Booth and his co-conspirators hoped to throw the U.S. government into disarray. Learning that Lincoln was to the acclaimed performance of “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre in WDC. The plan was put in motion.

Less than four months after his inauguration, President Garfield arrived at the Washington railroad depot on July 2, 1881, to catch a train for a summer's retreat on the NJ seashore. As Garfield made his way through the station, Charles Guiteau raced from the shadows and fired two shots point blank into the president. One grazed Garfield's arm; the other lodged in his abdomen.

Exclaiming, "My God, what is this?" the president collapsed to the floor remaining fully conscious, but in a great deal of pain. He suffered greatly from these wounds and eventually died from them, slowly, painfully with inadequate medical care.

Sitting in a Lincoln convertible, the Kennedys and Connallys waved at the large and enthusiastic crowds gathered along the parade route. As their vehicle passed the Texas School Book Depository Building at 12:30 p.m., Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly fired three shots from the sixth floor, fatally wounding President Kennedy and seriously injuring Governor Connally.

His running mate was Theodore Roosevelt, Governor of NY. In less than a year McKinley’s presidency was cut short by an assassin's bullet delivered in Buffalo, NY.

Noting that the reception was to last only ten minutes, an aide felt the president was unnecessarily exposing himself to danger. In reply, the president commented "No one would wish to hurt me."
