The First Great Awakening, was an evangelical and revitalization movement that swept Protestant Europe and British America, and especially the American colonies in the 1740s and 1750s, leaving a permanent impact on American Protestantism. It resulted from powerful preaching that gave listeners a sense of deep personal revelation of their need of salvation by Jesus Christ.

It was only after some decades of complacency in both England and the American colonies that the spiritual “revival” of the Great Awakening came about.

During the first half of the 1800's, the population of the United States grew from 5 to 30 million, and the boundary of the nation moved ever westward. By 1820 it seemed that the Second Awakening was waning; yet within a few years it had sprung to life under the ministry of Charles Finney. His enormous success inspired a large number of “professional evangelists” to come to the fore from the ranks of every major denomination. By 1840, the concept of large campaigns led by preachers who were not pastors of specific churches was generally accepted. From 1840 until the 1870s, numerous preachers entered the ranks of traveling evangelists.

Despite all this, the religious life of America was in decline from 1840 to 1860. Many causes were responsible, primarily the Anger over the issue of slavery in both the North and South that had reached fever pitch, and hatreds boiled.

The Fourth Great Awakening was a Christian religious awakening that some scholars; most notably, economic historian Robert Fogel, say took place in the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s, while others look at the era following World War II.

The terminology is controversial, with many historians believing the religious changes that took place in the US during these years were not equivalent to those of the first three great awakenings. Thus, the idea of a Fourth Great Awakening itself has not been generally accepted.
