Evangelist #1: Largely forgotten today, George Whitefield was probably the most famous religious figure of the 18th century. Newspapers called him the "marvel of the age." Whitefield was a preacher capable of commanding thousands on two continents through the sheer power of his oratory. In his lifetime, he preached at least 18,000 times to perhaps 10 million hearers.

Before his tours of the colonies were complete, virtually every man, woman, and child had heard the "Grand Itinerant" at least once. So pervasive was Whitefield's impact in America that he can justly be styled America's first cultural hero. Before Whitefield, it is doubtful any name, other than royalty, was known equally from Boston to Charleston.

Evangelist #2: D.L. Moody, one of the most effective evangelists of the 19th century, seemed to be uniquely unqualified for that job. He had only a 5th grade education. His grammar was bad, and he was far from a silver-tongued orator.

Fellow evangelist R.A. Torrey revealed how Moody beat those odds: “D.L. Moody was a fully surrendered man. Every ounce of that 280-pound body of his belonged to God: everything he was and everything he had, belonged wholly to God."One biographer estimated that during his 44-year career, Moody brought over 1 million souls to Jesus Christ.

Moody was an enthusiastic man whose sincerity and simplicity drew thousands to his messages. In a century when speakers were valued for their fancy word pictures and classical eloquence, Moody was a plain talker who penetrated the hearts of common men and women.

Today, Moody's legacy includes the Moody Bible Institute, which trains men and women for evangelism and Christian work. The Moody Broadcasting Network, serves an audience of over 30 million. Moody Aviation, trains missionary pilots and mechanics. Moody Church in Chicago is still a dynamic church in the inner city of Chicago.

Evangelists #3; When one thinks of Christian evangelists in American, the name of Billy Graham comes to mind. As remarkable as Graham has been, there was another “Billy” who was an American evangelist, long before Billy Graham. Until Billy Graham, no American evangelist preached to so many millions, or saw as many conversions as did Billy Sunday.

Billy Sunday was best known as a professional National League baseball during the 19th century and his agility on field. Despite coming from a financially weak family, he was not victimized by his humble beginnings and overpower his life. As an major league athlete, he was dexterous, passionate and extremely lithe when it came to base-running and hitting.

What stunned fans around the world was his sudden adoption of evangelical Christianity in the 20th century and his eventual digression from the sport he loved so much. Through his evangelist career from 1896 to 1935, Sunday preached about 20,000 sermons to one million people, and saw an estimated 300,000 conversions. He is still considered one of the most influential American evangelists.

Evangelist #4: There was little indication that Graham would one day preach the Christian gospel to as many as 215 million people in live audiences over 185 countries. Graham has been credited with preaching to more individuals than anyone else in history, not counting the additional millions he has addressed through radio, television and the written word.

It did not take long for people to identify with Billy Graham's charismatic and heartfelt gospel sermons. In 1949, a group called "Christ for Greater Los Angeles" invited Graham to preach at their L.A. revival. When radio personality Stuart Hamblen had Graham on his radio show, word of the revival spread. The publicity filled Graham's tents and extended the revival for an 5 weeks.

At the urging of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, papers around the nation covered Graham's revival meetings closely.
