If you do not have a computer for each student, you can present the tutorial class activity completing each activity as you progress through the tutorial. If you have a smartboard, students can complete the activity at their seat, individually or with partners, and then come to the smartboard to present the answer. If you have computers or a laptop for each student, students can complete the tutorial and add answers as they progress through the tutorial at their own pace. Either way, students can then use the worksheet as a study guide for a quiz or the End of Course Exam.

The growth of industry and cities created problems. A small number of people held a large proportion of the nation’s wealth while others fell into poverty. Workers faced long hours, dangerous conditions, poor pay, and an uncertain future.

Big business became closely allied with government, and political machines, which offered services in return for votes, controlled some city governments. As the United States entered the 20th century, demand arose to combat these ills.

Progressive reformers sought to remedy the problems created by industrialization and urbanization. National in scope, progressivism included both Democrats and Republicans. To progressives, economic privilege and corrupt politics threatened democracy.

Progressivism embraced many types of reform. Progressives strove to: Curb corporate power, to end business monopolies, and to wipe out political corruption. Democratize electoral procedures, protect working people, and bridge the gap between social classes.
