Various lists of the Wonders of the World have been compiled from ancient day to the present day, to catalog the world's most spectacular natural wonders and man made structures. The best-known list is that of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This list highlights the most remarkable creations of classical antiquity. It was based on guidebooks popular among Hellenic sightseers and only includes works located around The Mediterranean rim.

The number “seven” was chosen because the Greeks believed it represented perfection and plenty, and because it was the number of the 5 planets known anciently, plus the sun and moon. Many similar lists have been made since.

In 2000, the New7Wonders of the World Foundation based in Zurich, Switzerland, began an initiative to choose a new list of Seven Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments. The Foundation claimed that more than 100 million votes were cast through the Internet or by telephone. Voting via the Internet was limited to 1 vote for 7 monuments per person/identity, but multiple voting was possible through telephone; hence the poll was considered unscientific.

On July 7, 2007, a "new" list of the Seven Wonders of the World was announced based on online voting from around the world. The list of the New Seven Wonders of the World includes the following:
