Product Description
This bundle includes 5 assignments. Four of the assignments are reading comprehension worksheets (with Answer Keys included) for The Handmaid’s Tale. They cover chapters 1-12 (each worksheet covers 3 chapters). You can assign these as homework, and then use the completed worksheets in a follow-up class discussion. Or, you could use them as a small group assignment that will also lead into a nice class discussions about the text. Each response should be a few sentences to a paragraph. The questions include surface details that check for simple comprehension, but there are also questions that include higher-level analytical thinking and broader connections between the text and the real world. *Worksheets do not cover all of the reading, only chapters 1-12.
The other resource included is a graphic organizer. For the first part of this assignment, students will analyze the different roles of men and women within the society of Gilead. For each role they identify for men and women within society (Commanders, Marthas, etc), they will need to write a few sentences about how that societal post functions in society, and rate their level of importance. They will do this for male roles on page 1, and then for female roles on page 2. On page 3, they will need to think critically about how the society functions as a whole, and identify five roles that are most importance to the prosperity and continuation of Gilead. Once they have completed the hierarchy chart on page 3, they will share with a partner or group for a discussion and/or debate about their views. This can be given after all of the other assignments, or you can wait to give it until reading is completed.

These assignments should be given to students while they read the novel The Handmaid's Tale.
