Timelines are a very important tool to use to visualize major events in a given period in history. Students will create a timeline of seven significant events in Mayan history. The product includes specific requirements, a list of dates and events, along with a rubric.

Mayan Civilization Poem

The poem follows a specific format, similar to a biography poem. This product is a great end-of-unit project and a helpful way to review for a quiz or test. The product includes a direction sheet, a template, required historical topics, an abridged sample and a rubric.

Design Mayan Currency

Students assume the role of an artisan to create a currency for the Maya. The currency must reflect the values and daily life of the Maya. For example, students may include topics about religion, social structure, city-states, beauty, writing and ball courts. Additionally, students will complete a two-page chart to learn about the U.S. dollar bill. The product includes a direction sheet, a rubric, a two-page chart about the U.S. dollar, an answer key and four pages of student samples, along with four currency templates.

Mayan Civilization Skit

Students will create a two-minute skit in groups of three that demonstrate the characteristics of the three periods of Mayan history - pre-classic, classic and post-classic. Students will make the skit entertaining to watch, but also must incorporate significant historical facts. They'll present the skit in front of the class and in doing so, will practice their presentation and public speaking skills. The product includes directions, a sample of Mayan names, a planning guide, plot suggestions, an answer key, a rubric and a student reflection.

Create a Newspaper About the Mayan Civilization

This project gives students the opportunity to delve deep into the culture of the Mayan Civilization. While there is a lot of room for creativity and an opportunity for originality, students will base their information on historical evidence. Students will include the following components in their newspaper: title, two news stories, editorial, interview, advertisement, Dear Abby and an obituary. The product includes detailed requirements and a rubric, along with newspaper templates.
