I use this as a Throughline assignment--start with history and go up to present day issues on reservations. There are viewing questions students answer while watching the video. I stop the video to give brief lectures on major events such as Custer's Last Stand, Boarding Schools, Wovoka and Ghost Dance and Wounded Knee Massacre. TAfter the film, students work on discussion questions in small groups. I then have them research the 1980 Supreme Court case between US and the Sioux and have them read brief articles and watch short video clips on issues Native Americans face on reservations today. Students really enjoy this movie and the assignment.
