Description of Materials Included:
Business Basics Unit PowerPoint and Note Taking Guide: This is a unit PowerPoint and note taking guide created to be used in a high school business course. I use this material in my Intro to Business and Marketing course, but it could apply to other courses as well. PowerPoint includes links to several videos on YouTube to help provide students with visuals and examples to help understand material. Articles referenced at beginning of PowerPoint can be found using google or on the educational website Newsela. (I pulled them from Newsela so I could change Lexile reading levels to adapt to differentiate for the different types of learners in my classes. Great website for differentiation!)
Unit PowerPoint Teaches the Following Topics:
-Definition of a business
-Goods vs. Services
-Wants vs. Needs
-4 Major Functions of a Business
-Factors of Production
-Challenges and Opportunities Businesses Face
-Definitions of local, regional, national, and multinational business
I span this unit of instruction out over two weeks by adding the various activities included in this bundle, but unit could be completed faster or slower to meet your class needs.
Tracing the Four Functions of Business Activity: This is a mini-project meant to be used in a high school business or marketing course. I use this with my Intro to Business and Marketing students when we are learning about the four functions of business. Students work with a partner (or you could adapt to do the assignment individually) and pick a product and trace its development through production, marketing, management, and financing. Rubric included for grading.
My aim in creating this was for students to see how all products and businesses use the four functions. Students get choice in the assignment when picking their product making the learning and material more relevant for them. Class periods at my school are 90 minutes, and this assignment took 2 full class periods including student presentations.
Factors of Production Poster Activity: This is an activity meant to be used in a high school business or marketing course. I use this with my Intro to Business and Marketing students when we are learning about the factors of production. This could be adapted to use in other business/economic classes. This activity has students classify different resources by what factor of production they are for four different types of businesses. Students can work individually or with a partner to design their poster. Some answers can get tricky as some resource tiles could be used in more than business and there may be extra resource tiles that aren’t used at all, so students have the opportunity to rationalize where they place the resource and then justify their answer. Materials needed are listed on the instruction sheet for assignment.
My aim in creating this was for students to gauge that students can classify resources used in common businesses based on the four factors of production. Class periods at my school are 90 minutes, and this assignment took half a class period for students to complete working in partners.
Types of Business Graphic Organizer: This is an activity meant to be used in a high school business or marketing course. I use this with my Intro to Business and Marketing students when we are learning about local, regional, national, and multinational businesses. After I give basic information/definitions about the different types, my students research businesses they are familiar with to complete this graphic organizer.
My aim in creating this was for students to be able to classify the businesses they visit. It is also helps engage students because they can choose businesses that interest them to research. Class periods at my school are 90 minutes, and this assignment took about 45 minutes total. I also encouraged students to call local businesses instead of trying to find their information online.
Marketing/Business Article Review Assignment:
This is a resource that can be used in any high school business or marketing course. This activity has students read an article that they find related to content covered in class and write an in-depth review of the article based on the instructions provided. Great way to reinforce learning and have students reading material that shows how business and marketing concepts taught in the classroom are used in the real world.
Business Basics Unit Test/Test Key:
This is a Business of Basics unit test and test key created to be used in a high school business course. Test assesses material covered within the unit. I use this material in my Intro to Business and Marketing course, but it could apply to other courses as well. Test includes questions that are multiple choice, true/false, matching, short answer, and one question where students have to fill in a chart.
Request to Retest Form:
My policy is that students get one retake on every unit assessment. This is the form I have students fill out to request a retake on a Unit test. Form requires a parent signature.
Hope you enjoy the unit! Be sure to check out the other resources in the Marketing Mayhem TPT store!
