This activity works well in a US History or Economics class as an introduction to the concepts of monopolies, trusts, horizontal integration, and vertical integration. One student volunteer is used to make pricing decisions on the part of a local small business that is trying to stay afloat. Three additional volunteers will act as shareholders of a large corporation that will make pricing decisions with the goal of driving out the completion of the small business. The rest of the class will participate in voting for the store that they want to shop at and discuss how their spending choices were influenced.
The lesson is organized on a Power Point presentation that can be easily modified to better serve your needs.
