Each year my 5th graders learn about businesses and economy. We talk about supply and demand, profit and loss, and stalks as we lead into our unit on The Great Depression.
After our unit on Business we go on a field trip to Krispy Kreme donuts - there happens to be one close by. Any business operation (donut, or other) would work for this field trip questionnaire!
How our field trip works: I set it up with the business ahead of time and make sure we are going when the donut assembly line is running. The students look at the donut making process, which isn’t new to them, but they are looking at it with new eyes as we have just finished our business unit.
The students are given a free donut (yeah!) and then they sit down while the manager comes out and explains the store to the students. The students then ask content-relevant questions. It’s a blast!
