This classroom tested simulation is a fantastic way to teach students grades 7-12 about marketing and business. Over the last six years I have taught this, and it has been the lifeblood of my CTE Business classes. Students who have long since left the school say that when they look back, the Badge Builder Unit is what they remember most about middle school!
Students learn the 4 P’s of marketing with a hands-on simulation that takes them through designing and creating a product, choosing a price, promoting it with posters and other promotions, and placing it the market for sale.
Students are put into groups of 4 or 5, and each member is assigned a job according to their personality type—President, Administrative Assistant, Salesman, Manufacturer, and Designer. Each group designs and creates their own badges, and then sells them to another class. In my class, this was done with fake money they earned, but it can also be done with real money if your district allows it. Students keep track of their production cost, price, and profit in a tailored Excel spreadsheet that is provided. At the end of the unit, a winning team is chosen based on their sales. This project can take as little as 10 days, and could go much longer if needed.
There is some upfront cost involved if you wish to do this unit. The files include a full price list and resources where everything you need will be found. A badge machine can cost between $30 and $400, depending on your resources. However, once the machine is purchased it has a lifetime warranty and the badge parts are incredibly cheap. Having a badge machine on hand is also a great way to create custom rewards for your students in all classes!
In order to do this unit, you will need access to a lab with Word and Excel. You will also need a desktop publishing program. My students use Print Shop, but even PowerPoint will also work. You will also need access to a printer, preferably color.
The zip file includes step by step instructions for the teacher, video instructions for students on how to make a badge, a day-to-day PowerPoint for the students, a 10 page packet, the business plan, group evaluations, and everything else you will need to complete this unit. All 15 files are in an editable format so you can change and adjust it to your needs.
The files included here are the simplest version of the unit. I have other expansions that include different badge types, badge voting, and other promotions. If you want these extra files and have purchased the Badge Unit from me, send me a comment and a rating and I will send you the additional files free of charge.
