This escape-the-room style breakout lesson helps students explore the concepts of gross and net income, taxes, and budgeting through a fun and interactive activity! Students are immersed in an imagined scenario where their classmate's parents feel that they need to learn the value of money. The parents have locked the student's wallet inside the box to teach them a lesson, and they can only earn the key to unlock it by solving a series of puzzles relating to tax calculations, gross and net income, and budgeting for expenses. It is a great financial management introduction to these concepts in a fun an interactive way. I usually do this lesson in groups of 4-5 students with one breakout box per group. If you do not have Breakout EDU Boxes, digital breakouts can easily be created for classrooms with 1:1 technology. Check out this link: https://tommullaney.com/2016/11/01/use-these-templates-to-make-your-own-digital-breakouts/ It is also less expensive to make at-home versions of breakout boxes using pencil cases and internet-sourced locks. Just some tips!
This bundle includes:
1) Lesson Plan
2) Guiding Powerpoint (I post this to Nearpod, but it could be shared digitally or printed for students to complete)
3) Lock Code Master Guide
4) Directional Lock/Letter Code Signs for Solving Directional Lock
5) Keys for Tax Calculations that lead to 3 and 4 digit locks.
This lesson was designed for a maximum of 5 groups, but could easily be adjusted for more or less groups based on this foundation. I usually complete it in 2 38-minute periods.
