I love easy projects for working with air-dry clay. The kids really enjoy Model Magic, and it's simple to prep and clean up. These butterflies were a hit in my 3rd-4th grade after school class.
One of the keys to success is the handout with the shapes of the butterflies. Working with the handout and reference photos, the children sculpt and paint a realistic looking butterfly.
The 13-page project includes:
-Project Overview + Learning Objectives
-Fun Facts about Butterflies + Word Wall (with definitions)
-Recommended Books + Supplies
-Photo Tutorial for sculpting
-Photo Tutorial for adding veins, painting, and glazing
-Helpful Tips and Possible Extensions
-Student Gallery, grades 3-4
-Butterfly Outline Handout
Supplies needed: White Model Magic, tempera paint, plastic sheet protector, glitter glaze, wire, foam core or cardboard, wood stylus or old pencil, and glue.
