~Also available in Spanish and English~
This pack contains ten (10) leveled readers about the body parts of a butterfly. There are five (5) titles, each with a copy in English and Spanish, as well as a copy in color and black & white. I wrote these minibooks to go along with our class butterfly unit in April, but they can be shared and enjoyed at any time of year. They can be used whole group for decoding practice, sight word practice, or memorized, choral reading. They are also perfect to use with small groups and individuals at the appropriate guided reading level. I introduce each book and send them home during the month of April, but we revisit them the rest of the year as students are ready to read each level independently!
Four of the five books are informational texts, and introduce some text features. All levels include labels and diagrams, and levels D and E include a table of contents and section headings. Level C is a story including dialogue.
While each book focuses on specific sight words/high frequency words, they also introduce academic vocabulary related to butterfly anatomy including (not all words occur in all levels):
butterfly/mariposa, head/cabeza, thorax/tórax, abdomen/abdomen, antenna/antena, antennae/antenas, eyes/ojos, proboscis/trompa, legs/patas, wings/alas, forewings/ala delantera, hindwings/ala posterior, heart/corazón , spiracles/espiráculos, segments/segmentos

This download is a .zip file. You will need software to unzip it (preinstalled on most computers or available online for free). There are two copies of each book—one black & white and the other color. These books are formatted to be printed double-sided and folded in half to create the book. When you open the file, page 12 will be next to page 1. This is not an error, it is the correct formatting to be folded and stapled together. More detailed instructions are included in the download and also in the preview.
Each book is marked on the bottom front cover and in the file name with its approximate reading level using both Guided Reading letters and DRA numbers. While book leveling is a subjective art, I have done my best to capture the appropriate levels for my books.
• Level A/1 books have a consistent pattern and one line of text.
• Level B/2 books have a pattern which may change on the first or last page, and one or more lines of text requiring a return sweep.
• Level C/3 books have a pattern which changes on the first or last page or alternating pages, more than one sentence per page, multiple lines of text, and may include dialogue.
• Level D/4 books have familiar topics, simple plots, some compound sentences, typically are not patterned, larger number of high frequency words and more word endings, compound words, and longer words, and are often 10-20 pages.
Each license includes permission to reproduce the books to use in ONE (1) classroom and to send home with students. Please purchase an additional license for each classroom that will be sharing these books.
