The Butterfly Thinking Map is a good way for students to organize thoughts before doing a writing.
I use this in my classroom as a full group brainstorm before an individual writing assignment. I copy this onto the whiteboard, or display it under my projector and we brainstorm 4 or 5 different things that a butterfly is and has. This serves as a stepping stone for the students to complete it on their own. The students may use the examples we discussed as a class or come up with their own. Spelling is always phonetic in my class.
Once this worksheet is completed, I pass out lined paper for the students to make complete sentences on. They then can color the butterfly on the thinking map or illustrate their own.
I display the thinking map and the finished writing assignment together.
